Qana & the mathematics of war

The Israelis are usually good at divvying up casualties, kind of like spreading food out on your plate and hiding some in your napkin, so as not offend your host at a dinner party: 12 here, 9 there, 21 over there-- that's the safe way to go.

All is fair in war, as long as you don't kill more than 50 people in the same place at the same time.

So what in hell's name went wrong in Qana?

Peretz ordered an inquiry. We will soon find out.

It was just a miscalculation. These tactics are meant to scare the civilian community into abandoning southmost Lebanon, which is obvious from the above-board warnings for them to leave. Israel didn't expect quite so many refugees to be in the building.

If you heard the Israeli ambassador to the U.N. on Sunday, the explanation was very clear. Israel has a video of a rocket being launched from behind a 3-story house SIMILAR to this one. On this basis, every 3-story house in Lebanon is fair game.

We'll find out, because Israel is conducting an investgation? You're joking, right?

Sophia.Abady said...

What went wrong is that there were rockets being launched in Qana, and the parents of those kids didn't heed the warning they were given on 25 July.

Hizbollah is PROTECTING Lebanon, you see. Only Hizbollah can protect Lebanon.

Gray,
Yes of course I'm joking.

People who defend these are a degraded bunch of swines incapable of thinking. Their brain is in their ass and in place of their heart there is the crotch. These low level hypocritical third rate balggards are inhuman rascals whose thinking capacity would have made Dodo(remember you idiots, that animal which was soo stupid..)an Einstein! You low level scumbags all.

The Zionist screwed up is all. Big mistake though when they show their true colors.

Come on you just had it coming. Don't tell me that the Oh-So-Gentle-Hezbollah never had anything to do with this.

Naw! They never use civilians as cover, after all, Why Would They? They were just defending the faithful against "the terrorist state"(Every time I hear an Arab using this line I feel like puking).

You guys are real S.I.C.K.O.S.!

And by the way since when has the Hizballah ever not targeted civilians. With the E.U. going hammer and tongs against Israel and some other

Anonymous said...

You put the nail on the head. Qanaa 1996 and 2006 couldnt have been more similar.

Back then the brave Mujahiddin (or should I say "Muja- Hidden"!) launched rockets at Israel from a UN compound and got the predictable response of having missiles shot up their asses by Israeli jets and now once again the Brave Mujahiddin of the Hizb have proven their worth.

Great going!
Beat your breasts !

Go out and organize "spontaneous" protests against the U.N. ( What did they do wrong in this case? Old man Kofi has danced to the tune of Siniora and Co. saying all things you ever wanted to hear and more!) and the U.S.( But be careful! Burn as many flags as you want, but dont damage any American interests or you will have that much less in your country's begging bowl after all this mess is over! After all the "Great Satan" keeps on feeding you miserable turds!)

And then you can all have an "Al-Fateh" (When the Israelis finally shot up our asses )Day. And then you can all sing about how the brave fighters of the HA screwed up and got many hundreds killed and hid behind their wives and kids when they had to be fighting and still won the war!

You Guys are REAL S.I.C.K.O.S.!

Face the facts. First the people who died in that building couldn't get out-no money, no gas. Could I pick up and leave my home right now? Doubtful. Second Hezbollah knows full well that they can't use civilians as shields because Israel is bombing regardless of civilians so why bother? These people got stuck and got killed regardless of how much paper Israel throws out of their (our) planes. Third if this is how Israel measures up being careful of civilian collateral damage can you imagine what it would be like if they were less careful? Do the math people regardless of the political rhetoric that has gotten so tiresome to listen to. I don't think those dead kids are going to see the benefit of a "lasting peace" if you are naive enough to believe will ever come until all aggression on all sides is corrected. Good luck on that.

Sharlene Starner said...

Oh I forgot one huge fact. Israel says get out but bombs them on the roads as they leave. Hmm. What would you do? Hide in a basement or take the chance out on the road? Politics are politics. People are people. Or are they only people when they suit your own interests. And I'm not afraid to give my name because I look at facts without name calling if you disagree with me. You see, we still have some American rights left such as having our own opinion although I don't know how much longer we will be allowed to have even that.

Nasrallah's rockets killed three Arab kids in Israeli Arab towns. He called them shahids . . . martyers for Allah.

Why does he not make the same claim here??? He, his troops, have a longstanding reputation at firing rockets from civilian areas and/or then fleeing to civilian areas.
This is a political gain for Nasrallah. It has been planned out. And voila. A brief, fleeting pr win for Hezbullah . . . at the hands at the cursed Israelis.

You fire rockets from civilian areas, kids get killed, and 'you' are not to blame; no the Israelis are. But, in the end, Nasrallah used 60 of his own people for a political purpose. What kind of man does this make him? Yes, a resounding win for Nasrallah and his ilk. but, who is surprised. I think whatever 'cease fire' Nasrallah achieves here will be fleeting. More pounding of Lebanon will occur. No more double games! Either Lebanon divorces herself from Nasrallah or it defends him, heaping praise on the Jihadist.

On the otherhand, I complement the Lebanese PM. He's praises Nasrallah, Hezbullah, thanking him. Wouldn't we all agree that a "clarification" of one's true intentions/feelings if sometimes refreshing?

Uday Olmert and Usay Peretz join other heroes in Israel are murderers of children. Slobodan Sharon can die in peace. Israel is in safe hands.

That is absolute BS that Hez uses innocent people for cover. I'm not saying it doesn't happen, it is a bogus excuse for running a sloppy invasion, as well as an end run around at least one UN resolution.

The real problem is that the IDF is run by cowards, trying to impose maximum damage with minimal casualties of their own by engaging only through technology.

If Israel wants a buffer, they are not going to get it with just artillery and air strikes. They must deploy boots on the ground.

davidal said...

Yes, this I agree with. Hezbullah has fought to a draw, perhaps out-right winning, despite the tremendous technological air advantage. I also don't see what 1 or 10 or 14 days will matter to resolve the 'status quo.' I see Nasrallah firing more and more rockets; Israel responding by the air. This will be a long war of attrition, unless Israel launches a ground war. Cease fires will not work if one side obeys. The Lebanese people suffer, their government is worse that inept, followed closely by the tepid Israeli gang that can't shoot straight or eliminate their threat. While I loathe the Islamist hateful, blood-soaked Nasrallah, even I respect his tactics from a techical standpoint.

A vibrant Lebanon with a thriving economy was not in Hezbullah's interests. Is Nasrallah more popular today than yesterday? Is all attention deflected from Iran and aimed at Israel and the US? The only ones in Lebanon with any "potency" are Hezbullah. Nasrallah and his ilk are the clear, pronounced winners. The creative, thriving secular crowd in Lebanon are the losers. Israel and its strategic 'deterrent' reputation in tatters. The US maimed and marginalized. Another victory for radical Islam, emboldening the brothers.

sharlene starner brings up a valid point. there have been families bombed on the roads leaving lebanon. how is it the parents fault for seaking shelter in a basement? both options are risky. both options have proven fatal. what other options are there? it underscores the fact that innocent civilians in lebanon are dying in greater numbers than hizbollah or israelis. they are caught in the middle, and the powers-that-be won't even consider a humanitarian cease fire.

Christopher said...

The above statement is equally true!

Not that it matters, public opinion has been set in stone, but it was not a direct hit on the blding in Qana - the building collapsed about 4 hours after the missile hit.

dasein said...

christopher,

i did not defend hizbollah anywhere in my post.

dasein said...

i stated facts:

- civilians have been killed leaving lebanon
- civilians have been killed hiding in basements
- more lebanese civilians have died than hizbollah or israelis
- the powers involved won't consider a humanitarian cease fire

that makes me swine?

I’ve seen the uncensored images on al-jazeera. all of the dead children were wearing pijamas. how can you keep 37 children asleep when rocket launchers are executing fire in the vicinity, as israel claims? this is a cold blooded crime and there are no excuses for israel in this case. this is a turning point. at least for me.

Christopher said...

The Economist newspaper calls this an "Accidental War" -- so true. Innocent civilians are the ones paying for this. I don't see any solution or any good coming out of this. Everyone stay safe until it is over! The ONLY thing most of us can do is try not to hate. And I can't think of anything more difficult than that!

What about the time difference between the bombing strikes and the building explosion/collapse? Surely there must have been explosives stored in the building. Considering the readiness of hezbollah to milk this situation for all its PR advantages, and considering their disregard for the lives of fellow Lebanese, it's entirely possible hezbollah blew up this building themselves

Why the outrage now?

The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) have been killing innocent Palestinian and Lebanese civilians for years. recently, a Palestinian family of 6 was killed by an Israeli missile strike while they were enjoying a day at the beach. A BEACH !!!! the IDF usual respone was an expression of deep sorrow and that this was an accident. How many times are we going to hear the same excuse.

The IDF is the superpower of the Middle East, thanks to US taxdollars and military support. They use F-16s and laser guided missiles against civilians in towns and villages. what a bunch of cowards. Are they too afraid to put troops on the ground in Gaza and Lebanon to capture their enemies? The IDF would prefer to bomb entire neighborhoods.

The world is watching. More importantly, God is watching the Israeli crimes against humanity.

So, what would everyone be saying if it were Lebanon that did what the Israelis did (blowing up a building with inocents like children).
I doubt they'd be saying 'Oh it was just a mistake. They don't do that kind of thing.
Right...

But this is the SECOND TIME. Israel hit Qana in (I think)1996? and killed 113 Lebanese refugees in a UN camp. How many times can they keep doing this by "accident" and getting away with it, as long as it takes to "accidentally" KILL OFF Qana's entire population? This is nuts!

Anonymous said...

Hizbollah is made up of Lebanese people. This fact seems to escape everybody. And since 2001, only six Israelis have been killed in cross-border incidents involving Lebanon. Israel is inheritor of the Nazi legacy. It's committin genocide in the West Bank, the Gaza and now in Lebanon. Talk about the battered identifying with the batterer!

Warned to leave so they could be shot up on the highway, even in ambulances?...little wonder the poor sods didnt go anywhere and the Nazi machine could crush them at will.

There was no mistake. Israeli gun cameras videoed Hizballah rockets being fired from behind the building in question. Whether the women and children down in the building's basement were there by choice, is the open question.

Israel has a long history of being very efficient in "ethnic cleansing." Eviction of other people was the godfather at its birth. Now it is cleansing Southern Lebanon of the people who are in its way. The insanity that Israel kills anybody, innocent or not, who is in its path of its version of self defense, has to stop. The collective narcissim of this nation that makes it entitled to be special and do whatever because God is on their side for 3 thousand years is destroying its very core, its human essence, as well as the peoples around it.

Given the grace of distance and not supporting either party in the melee, in other words to look at things in an objective light, it obvious what happened...the IDF was given rotten intel with the worse case scenario being that one of their spies in Lebanon is a double agent and set up this massacre...remember...a zealot will sacrifice ANYONE, including himself, for the CAUSE.

Sky-Ho said...

"It is OK for Hezbollah to fire rockets into Haifa. No outrage over that."

Just as it is OK for Israel to fire artillery shells/drop bombs into civilian areas of Lebanon.

Considering the tech. advantage Israel possesses, if they really wished to win, they would quit being such cowards.

Anonymous said...

The only innocent people are the children who are at the mercy of parents who choose to live among terrorists.

Israel today said it has destroyed and estimated 2/3 of the missiles in Lebanon, and there were over 1,000 rockets fired into Israel.

It is well known that Hezbollah has lived among civilians.

Wouldn't you think that the Lebanese would have NOTICED that much firepower, rockets, missiles among them?

Innocent, indeed.

kg said...

The idea that Israel destroyed the building in Qana after the Hezbollah rocket(s) were fired from the area of the building, is flawed logic. Time after time the Israelis knew that most of the Hezbollah fighters flee the area after they shoot off the rockets, and they knew they would flee this time. So the destruction of the home for the dead Civilians is not collateral damage and should not be accepted as collateral damage, it should be labeled exactly what it was Cold Blooded Murder.

All this reference to Israelis as Nazis is disgusting. Israel is responding to cross-border attacks by Hizbully that occurred prior to Israel's exercise of its option to defend its homeland.

Let me say this - if the Jews of 1930's Europe had been engaging in a terrorist war against Germany of the the type that Hizbully and Hamas have been doing - if the Jews had been sending Quassam missiles into German population centers - then the Nazis would have been within their rights to exterminate the Jews in the Holocaust. However, that isn't what happened. The Nazis used the Jews as a scapegoat for their economic ills - even though the Jews had contributed greatly to the cultural and scientific achievements of Germany - and capitalized on a thousand years of Jew-hatred (that was due to the Jews insistance in their belief in a single god who wasn't sleeping with his creations to beget, Roman-mythology style, a demi-god) to systematically murder one-third of the world's Jews in a 5 year period. This Jew-hatred, even the "blood libel" myths, has been taken up in nearly every Muslim country - so, if anyone is to be likened to Nazis, it should be those Muslims who have adopted the Nazi ideology. For you to believe that it is the Israeli's goal to kill children, and not to rid itself of the Hizbully entity that is raining missiles down on Israel's children, you are either kidding yourself for political purposes or you simply believe that Jews have no right to exist in this world. And if that is so, maybe the Jews should exterminate first before they are exterminated - at least that is the message you send when you support Hizbully. As Abba Eben once said, "I would rather be condemned than consoled." How true.

EDB said...

For all you bigots who would have it otherwise (from the Israeli press, citing the Israeli foreign minister:)

"It now appears that the military had no information on rockets launched
from the site of the building, or the presence of Hezbollah men at the time.
The Israel Defense Forces had said after the deadly air-strike that many
rockets had been launched from Qana. However, it changed its version on
Monday.
The site was included in an IAF plan to strike at several buildings in
proximity to a previous launching site. Similar strikes were carried out
in the past. However, there were no rocket launches from Qana on the day
of the strike.
[...]
IDF sources said the warning pamphlets the IAF disseminated to
residents, calling on them to leave the area, were dropped several days
before the strike, and not over the weekend.
